Kano Workers Call for Deregistration of ‘So-Called’ Secondary School Union, Urge Government and Labour Leaders to Act
Workers in Kano State have called on the Federal Government, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to take decisive action against what they describe as a “so-called” union operating among secondary school teachers.
They urged the Nigerian government to revoke the registration of the union, arguing that it does not meet the legal requirements to qualify as a legitimate trade union.
Some civil servants in Kano State have also raised concerns over alleged misconduct by the union’s state chairman, accusing him of persistent verbal abuse and disrespect toward the NLC, TUC, and other labour organizations. They are demanding legal action against the chairman for what they described as repeated insults and attacks on established labour bodies.
The aggrieved workers, drawn from various labour unions in the state, further appealed to the Kano State Government to take all necessary measures to discipline the individual and ensure the complete dissolution of the union within the state.
They also accused the union leadership of exploiting workers—particularly secondary school teachers—by allegedly deducting money from their salaries under the guise of levies without their consent.
Additionally, the chairman is alleged to have circulated a video on Workers’ Day 2026, following the May Day parade held on Friday, May 1, 2026. In the video, he reportedly insulted and discredited the NLC, TUC, and other labour unions, allegedly out of frustration after failing to secure first position in the parade competition.
In light of these developments, workers across Kano State are calling on security agencies to urgently intervene, warning that the chairman’s actions could incite unrest among workers and disrupt the unity of labour unions in the state.
