Kano Workers Call for Probe, Deregistration of Secondary School Teachers’ Union Over Alleged Misconduct
Workers in Kano State have urged the Federal Government, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to take decisive action against a secondary school teachers’ union they describe as illegitimate.
The workers called on the government to revoke the union’s registration, arguing that it does not meet the legal requirements to function as a recognized trade union.
Several civil servants in the state have also raised concerns over the alleged conduct of the union’s chairman, accusing him of persistent verbal attacks and a lack of respect toward the NLC, TUC, and other labour organizations. They are demanding legal action against him over what they describe as repeated insults directed at established unions.
The aggrieved workers, drawn from different labour groups across Kano State, further appealed to the state government to take firm disciplinary measures against the chairman and ensure the union is dissolved within the state.
They also alleged that the union’s leadership has been exploiting workers—particularly secondary school teachers—by deducting money from their salaries as levies without their consent.
The chairman is additionally accused of circulating a video on International Workers’ Day 2026, following the May Day parade held on Friday, May 1, in which he allegedly criticized and discredited the NLC, TUC, and other labour unions, reportedly after failing to secure first position in the parade.
Amid these concerns, workers across the state have called on security agencies to urgently intervene, warning that the chairman’s actions could heighten tensions and undermine unity among labour unions in Kano State.
