Gov. Abba Yusuf Merges Higher Education with Ministry of Education to Strengthen Sector Reforms in Kano, Deputy loses portfolio

The Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the merger of the Ministry of Higher Education with the Ministry of Education as part of efforts to strengthen coordination and accelerate reforms in the state’s education sector.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Director General, Media and Publicity, Government House Kano, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

According to the statement, the restructuring will create a single entity to be known as the Ministry of Education, with a specialized Directorate of Higher Education established within the ministry to oversee tertiary education activities across the state.

The directorate will be headed by a Permanent Secretary and supported by relevant personnel to ensure effective supervision and administration of higher education institutions in Kano State.

The statement further explained that all agencies previously under the defunct Ministry of Higher Education, including the Scholarship Board, will now return to the Ministry of Education. In addition, state-owned universities and other higher education institutions will be supervised by the newly created Directorate of Higher Education within the ministry.

The restructuring forms part of the Kano State Government’s broader education sector reform aimed at repositioning the sector, eliminating duplication of responsibilities, improving policy coordination across all levels of education, and reducing the cost of governance.

Governor Yusuf stated that the reform is designed to enhance efficiency, accountability, and the overall quality of education administration in the state.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to implementing far-reaching reforms that will revitalize the education sector and secure a brighter future for the younger generation in Kano State.

Consequently, the Office of the Secretary to the State Government and the Office of the Head of Service have been directed to ensure the immediate and seamless realignment of the affected ministries and their respective departments.

The statement was signed by Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Director General, Media and Publicity, Government House Kano.
