NUT KANO URGES TEACHERS TO SHUN RUMOURS AND DISPARAGING COMMENTS AGAINST THE UNION
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Kano State Wing, has called on all teachers, especially those in primary and secondary schools, to avoid spreading rumours or making derogatory statements against the union.
In a public statement, the Union reassured teachers that it remains fully committed to protecting their interests, rights, and welfare at all times. It emphasized that issues such as salary increments, improved welfare, and upholding the dignity of teachers are not new concerns, but matters the union has consistently pursued over time without relenting.
The NUT acknowledged the current economic hardship faced by teachers due to the rising cost of living, and urged them to understand that, despite its commitment and efforts, the Union does not have the direct authority to increase salaries. The union’s role, it said, is to negotiate, represent, apply legal pressure, and convey teachers’ demands directly to the state government and relevant authorities a responsibility it continues to carry out day and night.
The statement expressed disappointment over the way some teachers, out of lack of awareness about the union’s behind-the-scenes efforts, wrongly assume nothing is being done, and go as far as insulting or discrediting union leaders. The union described this as unfair, emphasizing that anyone who follows current developments can see that the NUT has never neglected teachers’ rights and will never remain silent in the face of injustice.
When We Look at the Issue of Promotion, It Clearly Reflects the Progress Achieved
The matter of timely promotion stands as clear evidence of the remarkable progress that has been achieved. Since the strengthened collaboration between the Kano State , Boards , MOE and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), no sector in the state has witnessed more consistent and timely promotions than that of teachers. Despite existing challenges, meaningful advancements have been made a result made possible only through the unwavering commitment and close monitoring by the union.
Similarly, the NUT continues to actively pursue key issues such as salary adjustments for primary school teachers, payment of outstanding entitlements, and all matters concerning the well-being, safety, and dignity of teachers. The union is not just speaking; it has submitted formal complaints and practical recommendations to the Kano State Government aimed at improving the education sector.
Some of the critical demands presented to the Kano State Government include:
1. Improving teachers’ salaries in light of current economic realities.
2. Timely payment of all entitlements without delays.
3. Ensuring fairness and transparency in the promotion process.
4. Providing welfare and protection for teachers in their workplaces.
5. Recognising education and teachers as pillars of societal development.
We want to reiterate that the progress seen today did not come easily. It is the result of patience, resilience, and unity. Therefore, we urge all teachers to remain understanding, avoid hasty conclusions, and refrain from listening to rumours spread by those lacking full information.
Finally, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Kano State Wing, assures all teachers that their interests will never be abandoned. We will continue to stand firm in defending their rights until the desired outcomes are achieved. We call on all teachers to stand by their union — because unity is the key to success — and, God willing, the fruits of this collective effort will soon be evident.
