Kano First: Waiya Urges Editors to Uphold Responsible Journalism and Promote Unity
The Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, has urged media editors in the state to uphold responsibility, professionalism, and patriotism in the discharge of their duties, describing the media as a critical partner in fostering peace, unity, and sustainable development.

The call was contained in a statement issued by the Director of Special Duties, Sani Abba Yola, and made available to journalists on Tuesday.
Comrade Waiya made the appeal during a one-day roundtable discussion with editors, organized by the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs in collaboration with Nadeem Media Consults. He emphasized the state government’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with media stakeholders and bridging existing gaps in engagement.
According to him, the Kano State Government has no intention of suppressing journalism but is determined to provide practitioners with the freedom to operate within the bounds of professional ethics. He reaffirmed the government’s support for press freedom and constructive media engagement.
The Commissioner reminded journalists that beyond their professional obligations, they also owe a duty to society. He stressed that public safety, national interest, and peaceful coexistence must guide reportage, particularly in an era defined by digital transformation and emerging technologies.
Describing editors as “judges in the newsroom,” Waiya noted that they must carefully evaluate the implications of information before publication, address unprofessional practices, and remain conversant with both local and global developments. He urged editors to think beyond limitations, invest in capacity building, and raise professional standards to enhance the credibility and societal role of the media.
Comrade Waiya also highlighted ongoing efforts by the state government to promote unity and prioritize Kano’s collective interest over individual ambitions, referencing recent political developments aimed at repositioning the state for progress.
He assured editors of the Ministry’s continued engagement and support to improve media practice, while calling on them to support public enlightenment and contribute to building a peaceful, informed, and united Kano.
At the roundtable, Associate Professor Sule Ya’u Sule delivered a presentation titled “Who Is an Editor?”, while Malam Muktar Magaji presented a paper on “Editor and Reporter: Rapport for Newsroom Output.”
In his vote of thanks, a Standing Committee Member of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, Comrade Umoru Ibrahim, commended the Commissioner for organizing capacity-building workshops for media practitioners and for facilitating journalists’ registration with professional bodies in the state.

Make it shorter for press release use
Adapt it to international media style
Or rewrite it in British or American newsroom tone
