NUT: Governor Abba, You Have No Problem with Teachers as Long as You Align Salaries with the ₦70,000 Minimum Wage

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Kano State Chapter, has stated that if the Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, resolves the issue of teachers’ salaries in line with the ₦70,000 national minimum wage, teachers in the state will, without any doubt, give him 100% support in all their demands.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers in Kano State, Comrade Baffa Ibrahim Garko, said that if His Excellency Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf harmonizes the salaries of primary school teachers, teachers will be happy and will fully support the Abba Kabir Yusuf administration. Garko made this statement on Tuesday, 27/1/2026, during an interview with a media organization in Kano State.

Garko also stated that the NUT will no longer tolerate the maltreatment of teachers under any guise or violation of labour laws. He further cautioned teachers to rededicate themselves to hard work with honesty and integrity.

According to Garko, the NUT has initiated a programme to train teachers in various self-reliance skills after retirement (Life After Retirement). He noted that this initiative will help retirees achieve peace of mind and stability after completing their service.

Garko called on the Kano State Government to introduce a system for paying school principals Duty Post allowances as well as imprest funds to enable them to effectively manage school activities. He explained that currently, school heads are bearing some operational costs from their personal funds, even though the government is making efforts to provide teaching and learning materials, renovate schools, and promote teachers. The NUT commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for prioritizing education and for the prompt payment of salaries.

Finally, Garko urged teachers to continue praying for the union to achieve the desired successes in addressing all issues affecting teachers.
