Political Loyalty, Governance, and the Responsibility of Leadership in Kano

By Comrade Najeeb Nasir Ibrahim

The recent absence of the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, from the 38th State Executive Council meeting has once again placed the political situation within Kano’s executive leadership under intense public scrutiny. The meeting, presided over by the Executive Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, was convened to deliberate on critical matters affecting governance and development in the state. Yet the empty seat of the Deputy Governor spoke louder than many political statements.

Governance thrives on unity of purpose, mutual trust, and a shared political direction. When a governor and deputy governor emerge through a joint electoral mandate, the expectation of the people is that both leaders will work in harmony to advance the collective interest of the state. When this harmony becomes fractured, the consequences are not merely political—they affect governance, stability, and public confidence.

The current developments appear to be rooted in the broader political realignment within the state, particularly following the decision by the governor and several key political allies to align with the All Progressives Congress. Political realignments are not new in Nigeria’s democratic journey, but they often test the loyalty, conviction, and political maturity of those entrusted with public office.

While some political appointees who disagreed with the new political direction chose the path of honour by voluntarily resigning their positions, the continued resistance of the Deputy Governor to align with the administration’s direction has created an atmosphere of uncertainty within the executive structure of government.

Even more significant is the fact that the Deputy Governor simultaneously holds the position of Commissioner for Higher Education, a strategic portfolio that requires active participation in policy formulation and government coordination. In a government that is pursuing ambitious reforms and development initiatives, the absence of a key official from the Executive Council inevitably raises concerns about administrative effectiveness.

It is against this backdrop that the recent call by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf becomes even more instructive and politically significant. The governor made it clear that any government official who is not ready to follow the direction of the administration should honourably resign rather than remain within government while working at cross purposes with its policies and political direction.

This call is not merely a political statement; it is a declaration of leadership discipline. A government cannot function effectively if key officials operate with divided loyalties. Governance requires coherence, commitment, and a shared understanding of the political mandate given by the people.

The unfolding events have also drawn attention to the role of the Kano State House of Assembly, where discussions surrounding impeachment proceedings against the Deputy Governor have been initiated. Within Nigeria’s constitutional framework, impeachment remains a lawful instrument available to the legislature when serious disagreements or alleged misconduct threaten the stability of governance.

However, beyond legal procedures lies the moral question of political responsibility. Leadership demands not only constitutional legitimacy but also ethical judgment. When political realities evolve, responsible leaders must evaluate whether their continued stay in office serves the public interest or merely prolongs political conflict.

For many observers and concerned citizens of Kano State, the issue is no longer simply about party affiliation; it is about the smooth functioning of government. The people elected leaders to govern effectively, not to engage in prolonged political standoffs that risk slowing down policy implementation and development.

Kano is a state with enormous political influence, economic potential, and historical significance in Nigeria. Its governance must therefore remain focused, stable, and forward-looking. Political disagreements should never be allowed to undermine the machinery of government or delay the delivery of services to the people.

At this critical moment, the situation calls for statesmanship, maturity, and a clear sense of duty. Public office holders must remember that leadership is not about holding onto positions at all costs—it is about serving the people with integrity and commitment.

History has shown that leaders who choose honour over political stubbornness are often remembered with greater respect. If unity within the executive branch cannot be restored, then the path of honour, dialogue, or constitutional resolution must prevail.

Ultimately, the people of Kano are watching closely. They expect their leaders to rise above personal interests and political calculations in order to protect the stability of governance and the future of the state.

And in politics, as in leadership, loyalty to the people must always come before loyalty to power
