Waiya Urges LG Information Officers to Prioritize Accurate and Responsible Communication
The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, has urged Information Officers across Kano State’s Local Government Areas to intensify efforts in accurate information dissemination and public enlightenment aligned with the activities of their respective councils.
Speaking during a meeting held at the Ministry, Comrade Waiya explained that the engagement was aimed at developing strategies to improve performance, especially as the state enters the year 2026.

He emphasized that 2026, being a pre-election year, demands greater responsibility from Information Officers to remain professional, objective, and committed to sharing credible information. He stressed the importance of adhering strictly to professional ethics and guidelines in order to safeguard public trust and promote informed civic participation.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to building the capacity of Information Officers by providing tools and continuous training. He also announced that the Ministry would cover the cost of application and registration fees for officers willing to further their education in journalism, to enhance their competence and service delivery.
Waiya further revealed plans to convene a special session involving Local Government Chairmen, Information Officers, and the Ministry to explore ways of improving grassroots information management. He noted that professionals would be engaged to train officers on managing social media platforms effectively to publicize local government activities and share essential information about their areas, including geography, population, and natural resources.
In separate remarks, the Acting Permanent Secretary, Usman Bello; Director of Information, Aminu Kabir Yasser; and Director of Public Enlightenment, Balarabe Abdullahi Kiru, offered suggestions for improved service delivery. These included reviving the Ministry’s Gani da Ido programme, training Information Officers on translation, and implementing other capacity-building initiatives to strengthen communication at all levels.
