Kumbotso Launches 18 New SBMC Committees as Over 400 Attend Ceremony

KUMBOTSO, August 30, 2026 — At least 402 people attended the inauguration and presentation of 18 newly constituted School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State.

The ceremony brought together school heads, SBMC representatives, education officials, directors and other stakeholders in the education sector.

The Chairman of the Kano State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Malam Yusuf Kabir, was represented at the event by the Deputy Director in charge of Community Engagement, Hajiya Aisha Shuaibu Na’abba, who delivered his message to the participants.

In his message, the SUBEB Chairman emphasised the importance of the new SBMC leadership in identifying challenges facing schools, listening to community concerns and supporting efforts to find lasting solutions to educational problems.

He also urged the committee members to intensify efforts to combat illiteracy in their communities and ensure that children have access to education.

SBMCs’ Role in Educational Development

Speaking at the event, the Zonal Director of Dawakin Kudu Zone, Hajiya Safiya Sulaiman Abubakar, highlighted the important role of SBMCs in strengthening collaboration between schools and communities.

She said cooperation among parents, communities and school authorities was essential to identifying challenges and developing sustainable solutions to problems affecting schools.

The Head of the Kumbotso Local Government Education Department, Comr. Aminu Abdullahi Kumbotso, commended the participants for attending the ceremony and urged the newly inaugurated SBMC leaders to discharge their responsibilities with honesty, integrity and commitment to educational development.

He also identified the lack of office space as one of the challenges facing the committee and provided an office within the Kumbotso Local Government Education Department for the SBMC to carry out its activities.

18 New SBMC Leaders Presented

During the ceremony, the NE Head of Mobilisation, Malam Nura Abdulmalik, presented the 18 newly selected SBMC leaders for Kumbotso Local Government Area.

The committees comprise representatives of the community, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), school heads, parents, community development organisations, security groups, religious leaders, traditional institutions, artisans, Almajiri representatives, adult education, the Ministry of Education and persons with special needs.

The newly appointed Chairman of the Kumbotso SBMC, Malam Muhammad Nur Adam, urged members of the committees to discharge their responsibilities with honesty and integrity while ensuring that children in Kumbotso receive proper educational support.

He also expressed appreciation to the Kumbotso Local Government Education Department for providing office space for the committee.

Kumbotso Commended for Education Initiative

The Kano State SBMC Chairman and North-West Coordinator, Malam Tijjani Haladu Baraya, expressed satisfaction with the large turnout of SBMC leaders at the ceremony.

He urged the newly inaugurated leaders to carry out their responsibilities with transparency and integrity in order to contribute to educational development in Kumbotso.

He also commended the Head of the Kumbotso Local Government Education Department, Comr. Aminu Abdullahi Kumbotso, for providing an office for the committee.

The Chairman of the Kano State Education Secretariats and Head of the Kano Municipal Local Government Education Department, Comr. Nura Sulaiman, said he was delighted to attend the event, noting that Kumbotso holds special significance in his professional career because he began his service there before moving to Kano Municipal.

He described the organisation of the ceremony as commendable and said it could serve as a model for other local government areas.

Kumbotso Council Urges SBMCs to Address School Challenges

Representing the Chairman of Kumbotso Local Government Area, Hon. Ali Musa Danmaliki Hard Worker, Dr. Shehu Ahmad Mariri urged the newly inaugurated SBMCs to begin by identifying and addressing challenges affecting schools within their respective communities.

He said problems beyond the capacity of the committees should be reported to the Kumbotso Local Government Education Department for appropriate action, while issues beyond the department’s capacity could be forwarded to SUBEB.

He added that major educational challenges could also be presented to the Local Government Chairman to facilitate the provision of solutions aimed at improving education in the area.

Stakeholders Make Recommendations

During an interactive session, the Principal of Zawaciki Junior Secondary School, Malam Yusuf Shitu, called on education authorities to consider moving JSS classes to the morning session.

He said the arrangement would give students the opportunity to attend Islamic education classes in the afternoon while also allowing boys to acquire vocational skills.

The Head Teacher of Sabuwar Dan Jirima Primary School, Malama Mariya Lawan, commended the SBMC leadership for its attention to the needs of schools and its efforts to promote educational development.

Similarly, the Chairman of the Sabuwar Gandu SBMC, Malam Abdulkadir, suggested the creation of SBMC zones to reduce the distance members have to travel to carry out their responsibilities.

The District Head of Kumbotso and Sarkin Fulani of Kumbotso Local Government Area, Malam Aminu Iliyasu Abdulkadir, urged SBMC leaders and members to avoid rumours and unfounded allegations and instead focus on unity, cooperation and finding solutions to educational challenges.

The Chairman of the NUT in Kumbotso Local Government Area, Comr. Faruq Usman, thanked all participants for attending the important event and wished the newly inaugurated SBMC leaders success in their new responsibilities.

The ceremony ended with prayers, with participants expressing hope that the new SBMC leadership would play a significant role in improving education and the welfare of students across Kumbotso Local Government Area.
