Kano Governor Yusuf Leads Mass Wedding for 1,500 Couples Under State Government’s Free Marriage Scheme

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has presided over the mass wedding of 1,500 couples under a free marriage initiative organised by the Kano State Government in collaboration with the Kano State Hisbah Board.

Governor Yusuf described the initiative as a significant humanitarian and social intervention aimed at restoring hope, strengthening family life and promoting moral values within society.

He said the programme demonstrates his administration’s commitment to reducing the financial burden of marriage on less-privileged members of society while providing them with an opportunity to establish families with dignity, in accordance with Islamic teachings and cherished Hausa cultural values.

During the marriage ceremony, Governor Yusuf represented the first groom and formally sought the hand of the bride in marriage from her guardian, His Highness the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II. The Emir accepted the proposal in accordance with Islamic law.

Earlier, the Emir of Kano delivered the Friday sermon, advising the newlyweds to build their marriages on faith, patience, mutual respect and compassion. He emphasised that peaceful and stable families are fundamental to peace and development in society.

The Chairman of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, said all beneficiaries were carefully screened, with the authorities ensuring that they met the relevant religious and legal requirements before the marriages were conducted.

The Chief Imam of Kano, Professor Sani Zahraddeen, led prayers seeking guidance, blessings and peace for the newly married couples.

Some beneficiaries commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for the initiative, saying the programme had given them an opportunity to begin a new chapter of their lives with dignity and renewed hope.

The mass wedding programme is part of the Kano State Government’s broader efforts to promote social welfare, strengthen families, and foster peace, unity and social cohesion across the state.
