NUT Urges Government to Rescue Abducted Teachers and Students, Declares Kidnapping Has No Place in Education
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Kano State Wing, in collaboration with the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) and the Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON), staged a peaceful rally on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, to express deep concern over the rising cases of kidnapping of teachers and students across Nigeria, particularly in the northern region.

Speaking during the rally, the Deputy Chairman of NUT Kano, Comrade Sunusi Dayyabu Minjibir, who represented the State Chairman, stated that the union under the leadership of the National President, Comrade Titus Amba, is deeply disturbed by the increasing abductions targeting schools. He highlighted affected states including Katsina, Zamfara, Niger, Borno (Maiduguri), Sokoto, and Oyo, where several teachers and students were recently kidnapped.

Minjibir emphasized that, on behalf of the NUT National leadership, the union is calling on the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take all necessary measures to secure the immediate release of the abducted victims in Oyo State. He further disclosed that the national body of the NUT has directed all teachers in Oyo State to shut down schools until the kidnapped teachers and students are safely rescued.
He stressed that schools in Nigeria must not be turned into grounds for criminal activities, declaring firmly that “kidnapping has no place in education.”
Following the rally, which commenced from the NUT Kano State Secretariat to the Government House, the union submitted an official letter to the Kano State Government through the Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), represented by the Permanent Secretary, Aisha Abba Kailani.
In her response, the Permanent Secretary commended the teachers for conducting a peaceful and orderly protest. She assured the union that both the Kano State Government and the Federal Government, alongside security agencies, are making concerted efforts to restore peace and put an end to the kidnapping of teachers, students, and other citizens across the country. She also called for continued prayers for lasting peace and security in Nigeria.
