APC KANO AT A CROSSROADS : THE CASE FOR A GENERATIONAL TRANSITION BEFORE 2027
By Najeeb Nasir Ibrahim

History teaches us that political parties either evolve or they decline. As we approach 2027, the All Progressives Congress in Kano stands at such a defining crossroads.
The conversation before us is no longer simply about winning elections. It is about restructuring the party in a way that reflects the realities of modern Kano — a state with a rapidly expanding youth population, heightened political awareness, and a strong appetite for inclusive leadership.
Kano politics has always been movement-driven. From the ideological wave of Aminu Kano, which empowered the talakawa, to the organized grassroots machinery of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the state has consistently embraced leaders who symbolized renewal and structural reform.
The lesson is clear: whenever Kano senses stagnation, it gravitates toward transformation.
Why a Generational Transition Matters
A generational transition does not mean discarding experience. It means harmonizing experience with emerging energy. It means creating a leadership architecture where elders guide strategy while younger political actors drive mobilization and innovation.
APC Kano must begin to deliberately nurture:
Reform-minded younger leaders within ward and local government structures
Policy-driven political engagement beyond personality politics
Modern communication strategies that resonate with first-time voters
Internal democracy that builds credibility among politically conscious youth
Kano’s demographics demand this evolution. A large percentage of voters in 2027 will be under 40. Ignoring this shift would be strategically shortsighted.
The Risk of Maintaining the Status Quo
Political structures that resist renewal often lose moral authority. The 2023 political outcome which strengthened the New Nigeria Peoples Party in Kano demonstrated that voters are willing to reward perceived freshness, unity, and direction.
APC must not interpret past dominance as permanent entitlement.
The Leadership Model APC Kano Needs
The next phase of leadership should embody:
Unifying capacity across factions
Respect for party elders
Genuine empowerment of youth and women
Institutional strength over individual dominance
Strategic calmness ahead of 2027
This is not about replacing experience. It is about expanding the leadership table. It is about ensuring that the party reflects the aspirations of the next generation while benefiting from the wisdom of the previous one.
As DG of The Unifier Project, I strongly believe Kano APC possesses the depth, structure, and human capital to rise stronger. But renewal must be intentional. Transition must be strategic. Inclusion must be visible.
Kano politics respects courage — especially the courage to reform from within.
If APC Kano embraces a carefully managed generational transition now, it will not only prepare for 2027; it will build a sustainable structure for the decade ahead.
The future belongs to parties that prepare for it.
And preparation begins with bold, unifying reform.
