A public affairs commentator, Mustapha Saye, has commended the Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, for what he described as sustained efforts to strengthen government-media relations and improve access to public information.
Saye said Waiya had placed considerable emphasis on engagement with journalists and information officers since assuming office, particularly in communicating government policies, programmes and activities to the public.
He said the commissioner’s approach had focused on transparency, public awareness and constructive engagement, which he described as essential to building a stronger relationship between government institutions, the media and citizens.
Saye highlighted several initiatives associated with Waiya’s office, including efforts towards the establishment of the League of Veteran Journalists, capacity-building programmes for information officers and the promotion of digital advocacy.
“Some of his notable achievements include facilitating the establishment of the League of Veteran Journalists, building the capacity of information officers and promoting digital advocacy,” he said.
He also cited staff welfare, civic education and closer cooperation with media organisations as areas receiving attention under the commissioner.
According to Saye, public awareness campaigns and other outreach activities had created more opportunities for citizens to understand government programmes and participate in public affairs.
He said Waiya’s emphasis on development, democracy and good governance had also shaped his approach to information management, adding that effective communication required regular interaction between government, the media and the public.
Saye stressed that professional cooperation between government information managers and journalists remained important for the accurate dissemination of information and improved public understanding of government policies.
He called on media practitioners, information officers and other stakeholders to maintain professional standards and constructive engagement in order to further improve public communication in Kano State.
