Unpaid Gratuities: Kano Pensioners Signal Possible Withdrawal of Support for Gov. Yusuf
Some pensioners in Kano State have drawn the attention of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the continued delay in the payment of their gratuities, warning that prolonged inaction could affect their political support.
The retirees, who spoke anonymously, expressed growing anxiety over what they described as uncertainty surrounding the settlement of their entitlements. They noted that their support for Governor Yusuf during the 2023 elections was largely based on his commitment to clear all outstanding gratuities. However, they now fear that the promise may not be fulfilled.
Earlier, former Deputy Governor of Kano State, Professor Hafizu Abubakar, had advised the governor to take decisive steps to settle the backlog of gratuities in full. He maintained that with the right approach, the government has the capacity to address the payments comprehensively.
Political analysts have also cautioned that failure to resolve the issue could have implications for the administration, particularly as the 2027 general elections approach. They observed that pensioners played a significant role in the emergence of the current government and remain an important political constituency.
In light of these concerns, some pensioners have indicated that they may reconsider their support if the situation persists, signaling the potential for political repercussions.
Observers have therefore urged Governor Yusuf to treat the matter with urgency, emphasizing the need to fulfill his campaign promises and sustain public confidence in his administration.
