President Tinubu Dismisses Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun Amid Controversies
Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally relieved Kayode Egbetokun of his duties as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Nigeria.
Senior police officers and sources within the Police Service Commission confirmed the development.
According to a source, Egbetokun visited the Presidential Villa on Monday, where he was directed to begin preparations for handing over official documents as part of the transition process.
Reports indicate that his removal was widely welcomed within the Nigeria Police Force. “Police officers celebrated when the news broke on Monday. Although the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, reportedly preferred that he remain in office, the President stood firmly by his decision,” a source disclosed.
Egbetokun’s tenure as Inspector General was marked by significant controversies, including the extension of his service beyond the statutory retirement age and years of service prescribed by law — a move that sparked debate over alleged violations of police regulations. Allegations of favoritism and preferential promotions also trailed his administration. Investigations reportedly highlighted accelerated promotions believed to lack due process, particularly concerning his Principal Staff Officer, Bukola Yemisi Kuti, whom critics alleged maintained a close personal relationship with him.
Further controversy emerged following reports linking ₦100 million from Anambra State security funds to Victor, said to be Egbetokun’s son. Critics raised concerns over possible diversion of public funds for personal benefit, allegations that reportedly prompted legal proceedings.
Meanwhile, sources within the Force indicate that Egbetokun is expected to be replaced by a senior officer from Lagos State.
