NUT Kano Rejects FG’s UTME Exemption Policy for Colleges of Education, Warns of Declining Standards

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Kano State Wing, has strongly rejected the Federal Government’s policy exempting candidates seeking admission into Colleges of Education from the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), warning that the move could undermine the quality of teacher education in the country.

Speaking on behalf of the union, the State Chairman, Comrade Baffa Ibrahim Garko, expressed concern that the policy may reduce the competitiveness and academic standard required for entry into teacher training institutions. He emphasized that the teaching profession should attract high-performing students rather than becoming an alternative for candidates unable to secure university admission.

Garko maintained that Colleges of Education must prioritize merit-based admissions by accepting candidates with strong academic performance, noting that this is essential to producing competent and qualified teachers capable of meeting national education goals.

The Kano NUT reaffirmed its full support for the position earlier taken by the National President of the union, aligning with the broader rejection of the UTME exemption policy.

He further called on teachers across Kano State to remain committed to their duties and adhere strictly to the National Policy on Education, stressing that professionalism and dedication are key to advancing the country’s educational development.
