Kano Targets Over 3 Million Children for November Polio Immunisation Campaign
The Kano State Primary Healthcare Management Board, in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), has organised a one-day media conference to sensitise journalists, social media influencers and U-Reporters ahead of the November 2026 Sub-National Immunisation Plus Days (SNIPDs).
The conference, themed “Media Dialogue with Journalists, Social Media Influencers and U-Reporters for November 2026 SNIPDs,” was aimed at strengthening media engagement and public awareness to ensure the success of the forthcoming polio immunisation campaign across Kano State.
Speaking at the event, the State Community Engagement Focal Person at the Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board (KSPHCMB) Rabiu Ibrahim, said the state had recorded significant progress in polio immunisation compared with previous years.
He disclosed that the Board was targeting more than 3,024,026 children under the age of five across 30 Local Government Areas of the state for the forthcoming immunisation exercise.
Rabiu explained that the decision to conduct the campaign across the 30 LGAs followed reports of a fresh outbreak of the poliovirus in Kumbotso Local Government Area. He added that more than three million doses of polio vaccines had already been made available to support the exercise.
He outlined several strategies adopted by the Board to ensure maximum coverage and successful implementation of the campaign.
According to him, trained immunisation personnel will conduct house-to-house visits to administer two drops of the oral polio vaccine to every eligible child under the age of five.
He further explained that temporary vaccination centres would be established at ward heads’ residences to make the vaccines more accessible to residents.
The Board will also deploy immunisation teams to schools to identify and vaccinate eligible children who may have missed previous vaccination opportunities, in collaboration with school authorities.
Rabiu Ibrahim called on journalists, social media influencers and U-Reporters to support the campaign through effective public enlightenment and awareness creation, stressing that media participation was essential to achieving widespread acceptance and community cooperation.
He also emphasised the importance of involving religious leaders in the campaign to build public confidence, address misconceptions and encourage parents and caregivers to present their children for vaccination.
The November 2026 polio immunisation campaign is scheduled to commence on November 7 and end on November 10, 2026, across the designated 30 Local Government Areas of Kano State.
The Board expressed optimism that the collective efforts of healthcare workers, development partners, the media, religious leaders and community stakeholders would help strengthen immunisation coverage and contribute to the complete eradication of poliovirus in Nigeria.
