The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano State Council, has called on residents of the state to give maximum support and cooperation to the Kano State Government’s Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse to enable it to discharge its responsibilities effectively.

The appeal was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the council’s Congress Meeting held on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at the NUJ Press Centre Conference Hall, Kano.

The Congress commended the Kano State Government for establishing the Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and appointing Barrister Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado as its chairman, describing the initiative as an important step towards addressing the challenges of drug abuse in the state.

On political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Congress urged politicians and other political stakeholders to conduct their activities in accordance with established rules and regulations.

It specifically cautioned political actors against thuggery, hate speech and defamatory statements capable of threatening peace, unity and peaceful coexistence among residents.

The Congress also called on the Kano State Government to urgently address the recurring farmers-herders conflicts across the state, stressing the need for proactive measures to prevent further loss of lives and destruction of property while promoting peaceful coexistence between farming and herding communities.

Similarly, the Congress urged the government and relevant agencies to intensify public enlightenment campaigns on fire prevention and safety measures, particularly with the approaching harmattan season, to minimise fire outbreaks and their devastating consequences.

On water supply, the Congress commended the state government for its efforts towards revitalising the water supply system, noting the improvements recorded in the provision of potable water within the Kano metropolis.

However, it appealed to the government to extend similar interventions to rural communities to ensure equitable access to clean and safe drinking water across the state.

The Congress also acknowledged the recent cabinet reshuffle by the Kano State Government, describing it as part of efforts to strengthen governance and improve service delivery.

It further appealed to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to consider appointing a qualified professional from the media industry as Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, in recognition of the strategic importance of effective public communication and information management.

In another resolution, the Congress called on traffic regulatory agencies to intensify road safety education and public enlightenment campaigns to reduce road accidents, particularly amid ongoing road infrastructure development and increasing traffic activities within the Kano metropolis.
