Kano’s Political Crossroads: Who Steps Forward If the Deputy Governor Falls?

By Comrade Najeeb Nasir Ibrahim

The political atmosphere in Kano State has in recent days been dominated by intense debate following the impeachment notice served on the Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, by the Kano State House of Assembly. The development has sparked widespread discussions across political circles, media platforms, and grassroots gatherings about the future of the state’s leadership structure.

While the constitutional process is still unfolding, political observers and analysts have already begun forecasting potential outcomes. One of the most prominent conversations emerging from the unfolding situation revolves around the question: who could possibly fill the position if the impeachment process is successfully concluded?

Under the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999), particularly Section 188, the State House of Assembly possesses the authority to initiate and complete the impeachment of a deputy governor on grounds of gross misconduct. However, beyond the legal dimension, the political consequences of such a process are often far-reaching.

In Kano, politics has never been merely about positions; it is about influence, loyalty, regional balance, and grassroots legitimacy.

The Rising Speculation

As discussions intensify, several influential political figures are being mentioned as possible candidates who could occupy the position should the office become vacant. Among the names attracting considerable attention is Murtala Sule Garo.

Many political observers believe Garo carries significant political weight within Kano’s political landscape. Known widely as a grassroots mobilizer, his political network stretches across multiple local governments, giving him a strong base of support among party loyalists and community leaders.

Another factor strengthening his potential candidacy is the issue of political zoning. Kano’s political tradition often places emphasis on maintaining regional balance within the leadership structure. Since Garo comes from the same zone as the embattled deputy governor, many analysts believe his emergence could help maintain that delicate balance while avoiding political tensions that could arise from altering the existing arrangement.

The Takai Factor

Another name frequently mentioned in political conversations is Salihu Sagir Takai, a respected political figure known for his long-standing involvement in Kano politics.

Takai is often regarded as a strategist with deep political understanding and experience within party structures. His supporters argue that his political maturity and loyalty to the system could make him a stabilizing force at a time when the state may require careful political management.

Within party circles, some believe that Takai’s emergence could strengthen internal cohesion and reinforce the ideological direction of the administration led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The Institutional Argument: Jibrin Falgore

Another significant figure being mentioned is the current Speaker of the Assembly, Jibrin Falgore.

As the head of the legislative arm, Falgore has demonstrated leadership within the Assembly and commands considerable respect among lawmakers. Some analysts argue that his role in the legislative process places him at a strategic vantage point within the political structure of the state.

However, political observers are also mindful that elevating the Speaker to the executive branch could create another leadership vacuum within the Assembly, a situation that political stakeholders may carefully evaluate before making any decision.

Beyond Personalities: The Real Political Equation

While the names of Garo, Takai, and Falgore dominate the political conversation, the final decision will likely be shaped by broader political considerations.

Kano’s political environment is deeply influenced by party consensus, strategic alliances, and the guidance of senior political figures. The calculations involved in selecting a replacement if necessary will therefore go beyond individual ambition.

Factors such as regional representation, loyalty to the administration, political stability, and grassroots acceptance will all play a crucial role in determining the final outcome.

The Importance of Constitutional Process

It is important to emphasize that the impeachment process against Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo is still at a procedural stage. The constitution requires a thorough investigative process before any final determination can be made.

Democracy thrives when institutions operate within the framework of law and due process. The actions of the Kano State House of Assembly therefore represent not only a political event but also a test of institutional responsibility within Nigeria’s democratic system.

The unfolding political developments in Kano State have once again demonstrated how dynamic and strategic politics can be. The impeachment notice against Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo has opened a new chapter of speculation and political calculation.

Whether the conversation centers on Murtala Sule Garo, Salihu Sagir Takai, or Jibrin Falgore, what ultimately matters is that any political transition must prioritize stability, constitutional order, and the collective interest of the people of Kano State.

As the situation unfolds, one thing remains certain: Kano politics, as always, continues to be a fascinating theatre of strategy, influence, and democratic evolution.
