There are defining moments in the life of a people when tradition transcends ceremony and assumes a higher meaning, becoming a symbol of identity, unity, and continuity. In Kano State, the revered Hawan Sallah is not merely a cultural display,to me, it is history on horseback, a living expression of heritage, and the enduring heartbeat of a proud and deeply rooted civilization.

As a citizen who values this long-standing legacy, I am compelled to express deep concern over recent insinuations and calculated moves aimed at obstructing His Highness, Mallam Muhammadu Sanusi II, the Emir of Kano from observing the traditional Sallah homage.

This development, if allowed to persist, risks diminishing not only a cherished tradition but also the collective dignity of our people.

Any attempt, subtle or overt to interfere with this age-old institution is both ill-advised and counterproductive. More troubling, however, is the growing perception that such moves are being driven by elements whose actions ultimately undermine the authority of the Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf. Governance must never appear susceptible to manipulation by interests that neither represent the people nor respect the weight of tradition.

It is important to underscore that this heritage has transcended local recognition. The Kano Durbar, which encapsulates the Sallah homage tradition, has been inscribed by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, placing upon us a collective responsibility to preserve and protect it. Any disruption, therefore, is not merely a local concern but a departure from a globally acknowledged cultural obligation.

At a time when the state enjoys relative peace, introducing avoidable controversy around a unifying cultural symbol raises legitimate concerns. Such actions risk creating unnecessary tension and could inadvertently destabilize the fragile harmony that has been carefully maintained. Responsible leadership requires not only awareness of such risks but the resolve to prevent them.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, at this moment, is presented with a clear test of leadership. The expectation of the people is neither excessive nor misplaced,it is simply that leadership must be firm, measured, and decisive. To stand firm in defense of tradition and institutional authority is not an act of defiance, but one of responsibility. It reassures the public, strengthens governance, and affirms that authority is neither negotiable nor easily undermined.

Those advocating for the disruption of Hawan Sallah must recognize that traditions are not expendable instruments of political convenience. They are enduring pillars of social cohesion. Undermining them for short-term calculations risks long-term consequences that extend far beyond the present moment.

One cannot ignore the broader implications. Moves that appear to provoke tension or manufacture friction invite critical questions about intent and consequence. The government must, therefore, exercise discernment and ensure that it is not drawn into actions that compromise peace, stability, or public confidence.

As citizens of Kano State, we look to our leaders for reassurance in moments such as this. We expect a government that protects heritage, upholds order, and remains insulated from undue influence. This is one such moment where that expectation must be met with clarity and conviction.

Ultimately, the preservation of the Sallah homage is not about personalities, it is about principle. It is about safeguarding a legacy, affirming identity, and reinforcing the integrity of governance.

History will remember this moment not for the noise that surrounds it, but for the strength and wisdom of the response it inspires. His Excellency Abba Kabir Yusuf must, therefore, remain firm, calmly, confidently, and decisively, ensuring that tradition is preserved, authority is upheld, and peace continues to prevail.
