The ongoing transformation of Kano State’s education sector has reached a new milestone as the renovation of Government Technical Colleges (GTC) advances steadily. Under the “Kano First” agenda of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the administration is not merely painting walls but rebuilding the very foundation of the state’s industrial and economic future.

For years, technical education in Kano suffered from systemic neglect, with workshops and classrooms falling into disrepair. Today, that narrative has shifted. Through the Education Recovery Plan, the state government has prioritized the complete overhaul of these institutions to meet 21st-century standards.

A centerpiece of the administration’s technical drive, receiving an allocation of ₦2.54 billion to modernize its workshops and instructional facilities.

Essential renovations are addressing years of dilapidation, ensuring that students in Northern Kano have access to a conducive learning environment.

Beyond the physical structures, these colleges are being equipped to support 26 newly approved trade areas, focusing on high-demand skills like solar energy installation, digital hardware repair, and modern construction techniques.

The speed of these renovations is fueled by the historic 2026 “Budget of Infrastructure, Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development.” With a record ₦432.4 billion (29.4%) dedicated to education, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has exceeded the UNESCO global benchmark, signaling a clear message,The youth of Kano are our greatest asset.

This investment is more than an academic exercise; it is an economic strategy. By revitalizing GTCs, the administration is creating a direct pipeline for skilled labor to support the state’s growing industrial base and urban renewal projects.

For the citizens across the 484 wards and 44 Local Government Areas, these renovations represent tangible progress. A functional Technical College in a local community means:

Immediate employment for local contractors and artisans during the construction phase.

Providing young people with the technical certification needed to become self reliant entrepreneurs.

Restoring historic institutions that have served as the backbone of Kano’s middle class for generations.

The work at GTC Ungogo and Dambatta is a testament to what is possible when leadership aligns with the needs of the people. As the scaffolding comes down and the new workshops open their doors, Kano is positioning itself as the technical and industrial hub of Northern Nigeria.

The message from the Audu Bako Secretariat is clear: #AbbaIsWorking, and the transformation of our schools is just the beginning.
