The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Kano State Wing, has emerged as the overall best-performing union at the 2026 Workers’ Day parade, earning commendation from the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The Workers’ Day celebration, organized annually by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), was marked on May 1, 2026. In Kano State, the event was held at the Sani Abacha Stadium, drawing thousands of workers from various unions across the state.

The Kano State chapter of the NLC, in collaboration with other labour unions including the Trade Union Congress (TUC), led the celebration with a large turnout of over twenty thousand members under the leadership of Comrade Kabiru Inuwa . In his remarks, the NLC chairman expressed appreciation to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for the consistent and timely payment of workers’ salaries and pensions.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, in his address, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prompt salary payments without delay, noting that civil servants across the state can attest to this record. He further assured workers that all outstanding gratuities would be fully settled before the end of his tenure. The governor also expressed concern over an alleged financial mismanagement involving approximately ₦1.5 billion linked to a former Head of Service, reportedly affecting workers’ salary funds.

Announcing the results of the parade competition, Comrade Matawalle declared the NUT, led by Comrade Baffa Ibrahim Garko, as the best-performing union in the 2026 May Day parade.
Reacting to the achievement, Comrade Baffa Ibrahim Garko, Chairman of the NUT in Kano State, expressed delight over the union’s success and commended the state government for prioritizing workers’ welfare, particularly teachers.
Meanwhile, some teachers and local government workers used the occasion to appeal to the Kano State Government to harmonize their salaries with those of state civil servants.
