NUT Threatens Action Against States Yet to Implement ₦70,000 Minimum Wage
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has issued a stern warning to states that have yet to implement the new ₦70,000 minimum wage, stating that it may mobilize its members to compel compliance with the law.
The National President of the union, Audu T. Amba, said teachers’ patience is wearing thin, emphasizing that decisive action would be taken if the affected states fail to act promptly.
Despite the warning, the union commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his efforts toward improving the welfare of teachers. Amba noted that the NUT would continue to advocate for better economic conditions for its members.
Meanwhile, the government is reportedly taking steps to enhance security in schools and conflict-affected areas. In Kwara State, the NUT Chairman, Yusuf Agboola, praised the state government for the regular payment of teachers’ salaries and efforts to clear outstanding arrears.
The meeting also reiterated a call on Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, to extend the retirement age of teachers from 60 to 65 years, in order to retain experienced professionals within the education system.
