President Tinubu Directs Governors to Grant Full Autonomy to Local Governments
President Bola Tinubu has directed the 36 state governors in the country to ensure that funds meant for Local Governments are transmitted directly to them, in compliance with the Supreme Court ruling that guarantees full autonomy for the local government system.
The President made this known during the 14th National Caucus Meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC), held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.
Tinubu emphasized that true autonomy for local governments cannot be achieved without direct access to funds necessary for their operations, stating that the Federal Government would ensure strict compliance with the Supreme Court verdict by facilitating direct allocations to the local government councils.
“Local Government autonomy must be practical, not just theoretical or written on paper. We will ensure they receive their funds directly. This is in line with the Supreme Court’s decision. You (Governors) must take this seriously and provide leadership,” he declared.
