Allegations of Judicial Bias Shake Kano: Injustice, Favoritism, or Abuse of Power!
KANO — Allegations of injustice and favoritism within the judicial process have stirred public concern across Kano State, following complaints linking a Hisba Court judge, Sani Tanimu, to what petitioners describe as the violation of the rights of an underprivileged young girl.
The controversy has sparked widespread debate, with members of the public calling on authorities to launch a thorough investigation to establish the truth.
According to reports, the matter originated from a dispute between two women, which was eventually referred to security authorities. However, despite indications that both parties were willing to settle the matter amicably, a third party identified as Susa reportedly insisted on pursuing the case further and advocated for stricter measures against one of the parties.
Alfijir Labarai newspaper reports that complainants have also accused a former judge, Idris Yahya, popularly known as “Mai Hannu Ɗaya,” of influencing the handling of the case. They alleged that even before the girl was arraigned in court, there were plans to ensure her detention, raising concerns that personal connections and influence may have been used to compromise the course of justice.
According to statements from the girl’s family, she was remanded in a correctional facility shortly after her appearance before the Hisba Court, despite her young age. Efforts to secure her bail were reportedly unsuccessful, as the presiding judge repeatedly declined the request, a development that caused significant distress to her family.
Following the court’s resumption after the weekend, the girl was again returned to custody, where she spent additional days before eventually being granted bail. This development further angered her family, who believe she was subjected to excessive and discriminatory treatment beyond what the nature of the dispute warranted.
Legal observers have warned that if these allegations are proven, they could indicate a troubling pattern capable of eroding public confidence in the justice system. They emphasized that nothing undermines society more than the perception that the powerful can influence judicial outcomes while the vulnerable are subjected to oppression.
Some analysts argue that the issue extends beyond a simple dispute between individuals, touching instead on the credibility of institutions entrusted with protecting citizens’ rights. They stress that whenever allegations arise suggesting collusion with influential figures to suppress the weak, authorities must act decisively to uncover the truth and restore public trust.
Legal commentators have called on the Kano State Government and judicial authorities to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the matter. The public, they note, is eager to determine whether due legal procedures were followed or whether external influence contributed to the prolonged detention of the girl.
Complainants further warned that government silence on such serious allegations could reinforce the perception that justice favors the powerful at the expense of the vulnerable. They stressed that the time has come to assure citizens that justice is not reserved for the wealthy and influential alone, and that anyone found guilty of manipulating the system or abusing their position must be held accountable under the law.
