Kano Hosts NACCIMA Executive Council Meeting as Government Reaffirms Commitment to Economic Growth

Kano State yesterday hosted the Annual Executive Council Meeting of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), bringing together key stakeholders in commerce and industry from across the country.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf was represented at the event by the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, who delivered a keynote address highlighting the Kano State Government’s strategic efforts to reposition the state as a leading hub for commerce, agriculture, and industrialisation in Nigeria.

In his remarks, Comrade Waiya outlined the administration’s ongoing reforms and investments aimed at strengthening the state’s economic foundation and improving productivity across critical sectors. He noted that the government remains committed to creating an enabling environment that supports business growth, attracts investment, and promotes sustainable economic development.

He also emphasised the central role of power supply in driving manufacturing and industrial expansion. According to him, the state government has taken proactive steps to address energy challenges, including the settlement of legacy obligations owed to the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), alongside ongoing efforts to establish independent power generation to ensure a more stable and reliable electricity supply for industries and businesses.

The Commissioner further highlighted the government’s commitment to modernising commercial infrastructure across the state, particularly the renovation and upgrading of major markets to transform them into more organised, secure, and investor-friendly facilities.

A major highlight of the meeting was the proposal for the establishment of a Commercial University. In his submission, Comrade Waiya strongly advocated for Kano as the most suitable location for such an institution, citing the state’s historical and contemporary role as the commercial nerve centre of Northern Nigeria, as well as its vast human and material resources.

He also conveyed the readiness and full support of the Kano State Government to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to bring the proposed university into reality.

During the event, Comrade Waiya was honoured with an Award of Excellence and was formally inducted as a member of the Nigerian Chamber of Commerce.

The occasion also featured the launch of a tree-planting campaign for economic trees, an initiative championed by the Women Chamber of Commerce, aimed at promoting environmental sustainability while supporting economic development.

The meeting reaffirmed Kano’s longstanding position as a key centre of trade and commerce in Nigeria and provided a platform for stakeholders to deliberate on policies and initiatives that will strengthen the nation’s economic landscape.
