Kano Govt Pledges Stronger Support for Teachers, Education Sector
The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving teachers’ welfare and strengthening the education sector through sustained investment, capacity development and the provision of a conducive environment for teaching and learning.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf stated this while addressing participants at the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration held at the Kano State Government House.
Represented by the Secretary to the Kano State Government, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the governor said his administration had implemented a number of measures aimed at improving the quality of education across the state.
According to him, the initiatives include the recruitment of additional teachers, construction of new classrooms, renovation of existing schools and provision of essential teaching and learning materials.
Governor Yusuf further disclosed that his administration had increased funding for the education sector for three consecutive years, while creating opportunities for teachers to enhance their knowledge and professional skills, particularly in the use of modern technology and innovative teaching methods.
He described teachers as critical stakeholders in nation-building, noting that their responsibilities go beyond classroom instruction.
“Teachers are not only knowledge providers but also advisers, mentors and nation-builders,” he said, stressing their important role in promoting discipline, good values and responsible citizenship among young people.
In his remarks, the Kano State Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Ali Haruna Makoda, emphasised the central role of teachers in achieving sustainable development in the education sector.
He said the state government remained committed to improving teachers’ working conditions and ensuring that they were provided with the necessary tools and resources to perform their duties effectively.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Kano State Wing, Comrade Baffa Ibrahim, urged the government to sustain its engagement with teachers and give greater attention to issues affecting their welfare.
He called for continued measures to improve teachers’ working conditions and motivation, stressing that a well-supported teaching workforce was essential to achieving better educational outcomes.
Governor Yusuf also called on teachers and parents to pay closer attention to the behaviour and wellbeing of children, particularly in view of the growing threat of drug abuse among young people.
He disclosed that the state government had established an inter-agency task force to tackle the sale and use of illicit drugs and support the rehabilitation of persons affected by substance abuse.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s determination to work with teachers and other stakeholders to build a stronger, more effective and sustainable education system capable of preparing Kano’s young people for the future.
