Kano Government Orders Retired Civil Servants to Vacate Offices, Hand Over Official Duties

The Kano State Government has directed all civil servants who have reached the statutory retirement age or completed the required length of service to immediately leave office and hand over official responsibilities and government property in their possession.

The directive was contained in Circular No. 10/2026, dated October 6, 2026, and issued by the Office of the Head of Civil Service of Kano State through the Establishment Directorate.

The circular, signed by Abba A. Danguguwa, Permanent Secretary, Establishment, on behalf of the Head of Civil Service, expressed concern over the continued stay and performance of official duties by some civil servants after attaining their statutory retirement limits.

According to the government, such practice is contrary to the provisions of the Kano State Civil Service Rules and other extant regulations, describing the continued occupation of official positions after retirement as legally and administratively unacceptable.

The circular directed all affected officers, whether retired by age or length of service, to immediately proceed on exit and hand over all official documents, government property and assigned duties to their immediate subordinates within their respective Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

The government further directed all Permanent Secretaries, Chief Executives, Directors of Administration and Personnel Management to ensure strict and immediate compliance with the directive.

It warned that any officer found to be aiding, abetting or condoning the continued stay of a retired civil servant in service would face appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the Civil Service Rules.

The Head of Civil Service’s Office emphasized that the directive is aimed at maintaining discipline, orderly succession and professionalism within the Kano State Civil Service.
