CALL FOR RESPONSIBILITY IN PUBLIC COMMENTARY. By: Nworisa Michael
I have carefully followed the recent exchanges involving Alhaji Buba Galadima and the Kano State Government, particularly the attempt to link His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, with the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Kano State over allegations of suppressing opposition voices.
As one who has been and followed closely on political developments in Kano state myself, with due respect to Mallam Galadima, I believe there is a fundamental error in merging these two separate and constitutionally distinct entities. The Kano State Government and the DSS are independent bodies with clearly defined mandates. The DSS operates under federal authority and carries out its constitutional responsibilities within the framework of national security laws.
To suggest direct political control without concrete evidence risks misinforming the public and weakening trust in institutions.
As citizens in a democracy, we have both the right and the responsibility to hold public officials accountable. The Constitution guarantees freedom of expression. However, that right is not absolute. It carries limits particularly where statements may border on defamation, incitement, or unfounded allegations.
I speak from personal experience. During the tenure of former Governor H.E Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, I offered public criticism when I felt it was necessary. I was neither harassed nor intimidated.
Similarly, I have publicly called out Hon. Mohammed Bello Shehu, Member representing Fagge Federal Constituency. His reaction was simply to block me on social media which in itself shows that democratic space allows disagreement without necessarily escalating into security matters.
The difference lies in understanding the boundary between constructive criticism and statements that may cross legal lines. Being outspoken does not mean being reckless.
While I commend security agencies for carrying out their lawful duties where necessary, I also respectfully urge Mallam Galadima, given his long-standing influence in Kano state’s politics, to guard his remarks carefully. Public figures carry weight. Their words shape narratives. And narratives, when not properly grounded in verifiable facts, can inflame tensions unnecessarily.
Kano’s political climate requires maturity, restraint, and responsible engagement especially from elder statesmen whose voices command attention.
Democracy thrives not only on criticism, but on responsible criticism.
Let us defend our freedoms but let us also exercise them wisely.
