Kano School Principals Demand Duty Post Allowances, Upkeep Funds, and Elevation to GL16

Principals of public secondary schools in Kano State have appealed to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to fulfill pending welfare commitments, including the payment of duty post allowances, provision of upkeep funds for school administration, and promotion to Directorship level (Grade Level 16).

The principals, under the aegis of their association, expressed concern over the delay in implementing these benefits. They, however, reaffirmed their confidence in Governor Yusuf’s leadership, describing him as a compassionate and promise-keeping leader committed to improving the welfare of teachers and the education sector. They noted that his declaration of a state of emergency in education reflects his dedication to reform and progress.

The association urged the state government to incorporate duty post allowances into their salary structure and release adequate upkeep funds to enhance the effective management of schools.

Speaking on behalf of the group, the President of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Kano State Chapter, Comrade Uwani Ahmed Balarabe, called on the governor to urgently approve and commence the payment of duty post and upkeep allowances. She also appealed for the promotion of qualified secondary school teachers—particularly principals—to Directorship level (GL16).

According to Balarabe, several principals have successfully passed the required promotional examinations and interviews for elevation to Directorship positions but are yet to receive official promotion letters or corresponding salary adjustments.

She further suggested that if immediate promotion to Directorship level is not feasible, the government should at least issue notification letters to the affected principals and implement their financial entitlements, enabling them to continue serving in their respective schools at Grade Level 16.

Comrade Balarabe also expressed goodwill towards the governor, praying for his continued success and commending his efforts in supporting education and teachers across the state.

Some principals who spoke separately expressed confidence in the governor’s track record of fulfilling promises and urged him to extend similar commitment by implementing duty post allowances for secondary school principals, as is currently being done for primary school head teachers.
