Tijjaniyya Progressive Youth Assembly of Nigeria Holds Two-Day Conference for Imams and Islamic Scholars
The Tijjaniyya Progressive Youth Assembly of Nigeria recently organized a two-day awareness conference for Imams and Islamic scholars, which commenced on Saturday, 7th February 2026. The conference was held under the theme “Awakening Hearts and Restoring Human Values.”
The event was both timely and significant, considering its objectives, which centered on addressing the gradual erosion of moral values and cultural norms in society. Discussions focused on the growing trend of disrespect toward leaders, the use of derogatory and abusive language, the spread of insults, and the increasing exploitation of sectarian differences. Participants examined how these challenges are fueled by individual actions and inactions, particularly in public discourse and on social media platforms.
The Executive Governor of Kano State, His Excellency Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, was represented at the conference by the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, In his address, the Commissioner conveyed the Governor’s deep concern over religious harmony and unity in the state. He noted that the prevailing atmosphere of intolerance, where no one seems spared from insults due to differences in opinion or sectarian leanings, remains a serious issue of concern to the government.
Comrade Waiya reaffirmed the Governor’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote peace, responsibility, mutual respect, and tolerance, emphasizing that such efforts are vital to building a safer, more united, and prosperous Kano State.
He further stressed that Islamic scholars remain among the few groups not yet deeply affected by these negative trends, placing a significant responsibility on them to uphold the dignity of Imamship and Islamic scholarship. He urged the Ulama to prioritize teaching and preaching the true and beautiful message of Islam, rather than engaging in divisive debates or displaying intolerance, particularly on social media.
The conference concluded on a hopeful note, with participants expressing renewed commitment to unity, mutual understanding, and teamwork. From the engagements and outcomes witnessed, it is evident that the time has come for greater cooperation among Muslims, serving as both brothers in faith and positive role models for the wider society.
