Teachers Blame Poor Banking Network for Salary Delays, Urge NUT/NLC to Intervene
KANO, September 5, 2026 — Some workers in Kano State, particularly public school teachers, have expressed frustration over the delay in the payment of their salaries for August 2026.
The affected teachers, who said they are yet to receive their salaries, have appealed to the Kano State Government to urgently address the situation and ensure that they receive their outstanding salaries, even if payment has to be made through table payment.
They also called on the government to allow affected workers to change their salary accounts, particularly those receiving their salaries through Providence (Unity) Bank, which they alleged has repeatedly experienced poor network services affecting salary transactions.
According to the teachers, salary payment delays have been a recurring problem since the bank operated under the name Unity Bank, but they said the situation has become more serious this time around.
“We are tired of waiting for our salaries. The government should do something urgently to ensure that everyone receives their August salary,” some of the affected teachers said.
Some teachers who spoke on condition of anonymity also appealed to the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Kano State Wing, to intervene and ensure that all affected teachers receive their salaries in the coming week.
They maintained that the NUT has a responsibility to protect the welfare and interests of teachers, stressing that the current situation provides an opportunity for the union to demonstrate its commitment by taking concrete steps towards resolving the salary payment difficulties.
The teachers further urged the relevant authorities to investigate the recurring problems associated with salary payments through the affected bank and consider alternative arrangements that would prevent similar delays in the future.
