Governor Yusuf’s Appointment of Seven Education Leaders as Permanent Secretaries Rekindles Hope for Teachers in Kano

The appointment of seven Permanent Secretaries from the Kano State Senior Secondary Schools Management Board (KSSSMB) by the Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has been widely described as a landmark decision that reaffirms the critical role of educators in public administration and governance.
The appointments of Nura Abba Dandago, Hauwa Nuhu Wali, Uwani Ahmad Balarabe, Rabi Inuwa Hussain, Hannatu Ado Gwaram, Aliyu Tsoho and Dr. Sani Gwarzo have been celebrated across the education sector as a clear recognition of merit, competence, integrity and decades of distinguished service.
Education stakeholders believe the appointments have rekindled hope among teachers, demonstrating that dedication in the classroom, excellence in school administration and commitment to public service remain pathways to leadership at the highest levels of government.
The newly appointed Permanent Secretaries bring decades of experience in educational administration, policy implementation, personnel management and institutional development. Their extensive backgrounds in managing secondary schools and educational institutions are expected to strengthen policy implementation and improve public sector administration in Kano State.
One of those who welcomed the appointments is Abubakar, Director of Planning, Research and Statistics in the Office of the Head of Civil Service, Kano State. He described the appointments as a historic milestone for the teaching profession and a source of pride for educators across the state.
According to him, having served alongside many of the appointees as a teacher, principal and Public Relations Officer of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), he witnessed firsthand their professionalism, humility and unwavering commitment to advancing education in Kano State.
He paid special tribute to Hajiya Uwani Ahmad Balarabe and Hajiya Hauwa Nuhu Wali, describing them as exemplary education administrators whose careers have been defined by dedication, visionary leadership and outstanding service.
He noted that Hajiya Uwani Ahmad Balarabe has built an impressive career spanning nearly three decades, progressing from classroom teacher to Senior Mistress, Vice Principal, Principal and Principal Director of Government Girls College Kano. As President of ANCOPSS, Kano State, she has championed continuous professional development for school principals, strengthened institutional collaboration and represented the state with distinction at national education programmes and conferences.
He further observed that under her leadership, Kano successfully hosted major Mandatory Continuing Professional Training (MCPT) programmes involving thousands of school administrators, significantly enhancing professional capacity within the education sector.
Similarly, he described Hajiya Hauwa Nuhu Wali as an accomplished education administrator with over 31 years of distinguished service. From classroom teaching to serving as Principal, Deputy Director and Principal Director of Government Girls College Kano and Government Girls College Dala, she has consistently demonstrated administrative excellence and commitment to educational development.
He also acknowledged her contributions to ANCOPSS, where she served diligently as Ex-Officio, earning widespread respect for her calm leadership, sound judgment and commitment to the growth and stability of the association.
According to him, Hajiya Hauwa introduced several teacher development initiatives, strengthened school-community partnerships, promoted transparency in school administration and mentored numerous young teachers and education leaders. Her numerous awards and commendations from the Ministry of Education, SERVICOM, ANCOPSS, the British Council and other organisations, he said, are testimony to a career built on excellence and integrity.
He stressed that the appointments send a powerful message that teachers possess the leadership qualities, managerial competence and strategic thinking required to succeed in top administrative positions.
“School principals routinely manage large institutions, oversee budgets, supervise hundreds of staff, implement government policies, resolve conflicts and coordinate community engagement. These responsibilities naturally prepare them for greater leadership roles in public service,” he said.
Abubakar also acknowledged the contribution of veteran education administrator and writer, Alhaji Adamu Muhammad Nababa, whose earlier reflections on the appointments inspired broader discussions on the significance of the governor’s decision for the education sector.
He commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for recognising the vast reservoir of experienced professionals within the education system, describing the appointments as a strong vote of confidence in teachers and education administrators.
He expressed optimism that the seven Permanent Secretaries would justify the confidence reposed in them through integrity, innovation, fairness and transformational leadership.
Congratulating the newly appointed Permanent Secretaries, Abubakar said their appointments represent not only personal achievements but also a collective victory for the teaching profession in Kano State.
