Federal Government Orders Suspension of NSCDC Commandant in Niger State Over Deaths of Alleged Illegal Miners

The Federal Government has ordered the immediate suspension of the Niger State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Suberu Aniviy[e], following the deaths of some youths suspected to be involved in illegal mining activities.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the suspension in a statement shared on his official X account, while directing an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths. According to the minister, the directive was issued to determine what led to the alleged killing of the youths in the Wushishi/Lukoto mining area.

The incident reportedly occurred after some individuals suspected of illegal mining were allegedly attacked and killed. The victims’ bodies were subsequently reportedly abandoned in the area.

The minister also called on members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with security authorities as investigations continue.

“From the outset, the Federal Government has taken charge of the situation. The comfort and safety of all citizens remain the government’s priority,” the minister stated.

He further assured Nigerians that the government would investigate the incident thoroughly and take appropriate action based on the findings, stressing that the rule of law musslt be upheld.
